So last weekend Jon and I got ENGAGED!!! It’s still very surreal to even be typing that out right now…. As I write this post I’m looking at the ring that he proposed to me with, the one that he spent so much time designing, the one that he put so much love and thought into. That above all is what makes being engaged so special; knowing that the person you love cares about you so deeply and wants to spend the rest of their life with you. I’m so happy to finally be able to say that I’m going to marry my best friend! It’s been a very exciting time as we shared the news with our family and closest friends. Seeing how genuinely happy everyone was for us was the most humbling realization of all. It reminded me how lucky we are for the amazing people we surround ourselves with. So now onto the most FAQ I’ve been getting since becoming a fiancé and bride-to-be:
When is the wedding?!
The short answer – I have no idea! I’m still enjoying walking on cloud nine and embracing every bit of this feeling. Jon and I haven’t spoken seriously about when the big day will be, we just want to continue to celebrate this time and take it all in. Once we do start talking seriously about it I think the first decision that we’ll need to make is where before we decide the when. We both grew up in Western Massachusetts and now live in New York. We have a lot of family in southern CT and New York, but we don’t know for sure where we would like to have our wedding since we don’t have any emotional ties to one particular area. Jon and I LOVE to travel, and since I also have family in Portugal and France, a destination wedding is definitely not beyond the realms of possibility… 🙂
Did you have any idea he was going to propose?
All you had to do was look at my nails and what I was wearing to know the answer to that question! Not that I was in pajamas or anything but, let’s be real, if I had any idea I wouldn’t have been in ripped jeans and a basic sweater haha! Also, I had no polish on my nails since I had just taken it off the night before. I always imagined I would have perfectly manicured nails when I got engaged lol. There are so many things I thought I would say or do in that moment, but it was like nothing I had ever imagined because it was a million times better. I didn’t need to have the perfect manicure or be dazzled up. None of those things mattered when Jonathan was down on one knee asking me to marry him!! Some of the best things in life aren’t planned. And in this case, Jon’s spontaneity and eagerness to go with his gut feeling (yes, I’m telling you he didn’t even know he was going to propose until that same day!) is what made that day so magical.
Did you tell him what kind of ring you wanted?
Nope! Believe it or not, I never told him anything about what I wanted the ring to look like. There were so many times that I thought of going to the diamond district to try some on since it’s not far at all from my office in the city, but I just never got around to it. For one, I knew for sure that if I were to pick out a ring and put it side by side to one that he picked, I would almost always choose his over mine. He’s the boujee-er (if that’s even a word) one with certain things than I am, and I knew this would be one of those things! And secondly, I always wanted it to be a huge surprise so I didn’t want to be involved in picking out the ring or even knowing when he was looking for one. I guess I got exactly what I wished for since the ring is absolutely gorgeous and he DEFINITELY surprised me!!
Did he ask your parents’ permission?
Of course. He has a very good relationship with both of my parents. We’re from the same town and since he drove up to MA by himself that weekend, he was able to stop by my parents’ house and ask them for their blessing. I will never forget what my mom told me about that night. She said that she had never seen him so happy, that his eyes were smiling from the minute he walked in the door and she could see that they were filled with so much emotion as he talked to them that night and showed them the ring (so, so sweet!).
How did he do it?
It was a very intimate moment between the two of us, so I’ll make this short: he went with his gut when he was in a comfortable setting that he felt was perfect for the occasion (not to mention that there was an absolutely stunning sunset that night!). Everything about it was so enchanting and romantic, a moment forever etched in my memory.
How does it feel to call him your fiancé?
AMAZING! I love this man with my whole heart and there are no doubts in my mind that he’s the one for me! We’ve definitely had to overcome some struggles as a couple over the last few years and we’ve been through many life changes, from new jobs to moving from one living situation to the next. We dealt with distance for the first 5 years of our relationship, almost always living in two different states. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world because it has made us the amazing team that we are today and we’re stronger because of it. I trust in God’s plan for us and I am forever grateful that He put this incredible man in my life!
I honestly cannot wait to start wedding planning! It is very overwhelming to think about but I have so many amazing women in my life that I know will help me along the way. More importantly, I can’t wait to blog about it! There is definitely more to come so stay tuned!
Lastly, thank you to everyone who has congratulated us on our engagement and for the outpouring of love – it means the world to us!
XO, Sandy
